Technology & Standards: Automated Data Capture

Automated Data Capture Methods

“Automated Data Capture” refers to technologies that allow you to automatically read and capture data by using some form of reader or scanner. This allows companies to feed the captured data into existing systems without having to manually insert it, reducing labor and eliminating errors. The more common forms of automated data capture include barcodes and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification).

While various forms of automated data capture can be used for internal purposes only, the real gain comes from the use of these tools throughout the supply chain –from point of harvest all the way to the consumer purchase.

From Supplier to Consumer

The journey begins with the supplier putting a barcode or RFID tag on an item, case or pallet … and ends with the buyer. Each member of the supply chain can take advantage of automatically reading the data contained inside the barcode or RFID tag. This will help their efficiencies and provide full visibility of that item’s journey.

Standards inside of these tools will also give supply chain partners one universal set of data for that item. This is especially important when tracking and tracing an item in the event of a recall.
