Government Relations: Coalition Participation

In addition to working with U.S. regulatory agencies, PMA serves on and supports numerous industry coalitions, some of which are:

Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform — The Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform (ACIR), was formed in February 2001 to lead the lobbying campaign for bipartisan legislation that would offer short-term relief and a long-term safety net for the industry's labor supply. PMA is an active participant in the coalition.

Alliance for Food and Farming — The Alliance for Food and Farming was established by California production agriculture to serve as educational clearinghouse to inform important publics on the issues of food safety and crop protection which impact the production, processing, and distribution of food and fiber. The Alliance serves as a gatekeeper between industry and the media and public, providing both informational materials and/or enabling contact with experts on the many issues which impact food safety.

Alliance for a Stronger FDA - The Alliance for a Stronger FDA brings together a broad group of patient groups, nonprofit organizations, consumer and public health advocates, along with innovative companies to work together to increase public support for the Food and Drug Administration. The coalition is designed to be a multi-year effort with the following goals: Making sure the FDA has sufficient resources to protect patients and consumers and maintaining public confidence and trust in the FDA.

Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) North American Trade Task Force — This task force will look to formulate fresh fruit and vegetable trade policy for the consideration of governments and others which will effectively address public sector/industry needs, while eliminating or minimizing negative commercial impact upon produce trade.

Crop Protection Coalition — The Crop Protection Coalition consists of more than 40 local, regional and national agricultural organizations in the United States representing thousands of American farmers, billions of dollars of agricultural production and employing hundreds of thousands of people. One of its key issues is the use of methyl bromide (an important soil fumigant used in growing operations).

Minor Crop Farmer's Alliance — The Minor Crops Farmer's Alliance advocates regulatory and legislative changes to address the issue of lost pesticide registrations for low-acre crops.

National Alliance on Nutrition and Activity — The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity advocates national policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet- and inactivity-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

Partnership for Food Safety Education — The Partnership for Food Safety Education is a public-private coalition of food industry associations and government agencies with the goal of educating consumers about safe food handling practices to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. PMA is a proud supporter of the Partnership, particularly its Be Food Safe program.

Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance - The Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance was formed to broaden the scope and efficiency of our nation's agricultural public policy. Its founding members include a variety of specialty crops organizations, representing growers of fruits, vegetables, dried fruit, tree nuts, nursery plants and other products.
